1948年出了轉速較慢、面積較大的33又三分一轉密紋唱片（即LP，Long Play），每面大約可以錄製6首歌左右，是由德國發明家愛米爾‧貝利頌（Emile Berliner）發明的。密紋唱片LP的誕生打破了SP「大一統」的局面，SP由於第一，錄音時間短，第二，單張SP唱片較LP重量重，相同錄音時間需要的唱片數量較多，不易攜帶。第三，粗紋唱片十分脆，極易損壞。第四，粗紋唱片保真度較密紋唱片差很多，信噪比低，低頻、高頻的頻率響應差。因此，自密紋唱片出現後，粗紋唱片便被迅速淘汰，於1950年代基本被密紋唱片完全取代。
